How is membership gained?

Self-selection; as potential members understand the nature of the community aspect and what their role will be, they can choose whether to join or not.

Do people have to eat in the shared house/common area?

No. Its voluntary. Some communities do expect everyone to help preparing the shared meal on a rota, eg once a month.

Do we own our homes, or does the community? What about renting?

Yes, homes are owned by individuals/families, not the community, and with the individual units, a share of the shared facilities is bought. In this way cohousing differs from other schemes such as Cooperative housing. Yes, renting is possible.

What sort of size are cohousing developments?

Best is between about 12 and 40 households.  Smaller and too much responsibility falls on some individuals, larger and the sense of community is dissipated.
