Springhill is a simple concept, inspired by co-housing in Denmark. It's basically a pedestrianised estate where cars are parked on the periphery. The result is a sociable space - you can just walk out on the street and see people, and you can put deckchairs on the verge because there are no traffic fumes. As well having as our own homes, we all share a large common house, with a dining room, kitchen, workshop, play area and a lounge for dancing, showing films - even for weddings. People eat there about four times a week.

The project began with one couple who had a vision of a different type of lifestyle… They wrote to and visited communities which seemed closest to their own idea of fostering a closer and more co-operative way of living with other people, while retaining some personal privacy. They shared their ideas with some friends and a small group of interested people formed. This group met for a year, honing the ideas and documenting them. Five members of this group live at Laughton Lodge today.

“No strangers here”

Over the holidays we had several visitors and since the weather was unusually nice (not raining!) the kids were all playing outside. At one point the kids were not visible and one of our visitors asked where my kids were. I shrugged and commented that I didn't know, they were probably at someone's house. She got this amazed look on her face and said something to the effect: " You just let you kids go into whomever's house they like?"   And I said sure, why not? There are no strangers here other than you
